Louie's Mom

I'm curious as to what types of heartworm medicines everyone uses for their Whippets. I'm going to have to change what I use now for Louie and my other three dogs because of cost. I just got word that my hours at work will be cut 20 hours a week! I have to find alternatives for many of the things I use because my income is taking a nose dive!

Our vet measures out the right amount for each dog and puts the liquid into generic bottles, and then I use an eye dropper to measure. Its much cheaper that way and works just as well. The brand is Ivermectin.

Sorry to hear about your job. Hopefully, you can find something to supplement your income. I use Heartgaurd. It is cheaper if you order it from a catalog, and in volume. I encourage my Senior Citizen friends that have the same size dogs to pool rescources and buy by volume. I encourage you to speak with your vet about the situation. Just like in human medicine, drug reps give out samples and promotional deals. Sometimes they give these deals to rescues. Your vet may have a way to help you. Call and ask the company for coupons as well. You can do this with food too, yours and your pets. If you, enjoy a product you can call and tell them. I just called the other day about some popcorn. I asked them some questions about fat and cholestoral, and I told them how much I loved their product. They gave ne huge promotional coupons. They were for free stuff 1/2 off stuff and buy one, get one free. I was able to stock up. Microwave popcorn can be pricey and I eat a bag, or two a day, so viola! You would be suprised how much that you can score. I'm huge on coupons, but my Husband's friend is even worse. She has bought a cart of groceries and had the store pay her twenty bucks. When you use coupons in a superstore, alot of times the store generates more print out coupons. My job's been a turd for years, so we live off of my Husband's pay. I''m in school now and we really have to tighten up. Don't be afraid to ask for deals. I totally do. Vets know times are tough and since you've had your dog for a while, your vet knows that you're a good owner, he'll help you find a way. I hope things pick up at you're job again soon.

Oh boy, I can totally relate. I cut out all the goodies (pop, juice, chips, ice cream, and even things like fabric softner, and swapped many "specialty" cleaning supplies for good old fashioned - and cheap - vinegar!). Helloooo Costco! I quit impulse make-up buying, too (I really don't need 10 lipsticks!). The extra space in my makeup drawer is so great! Annnyway...
A Whippet friend recommended Revolution, which is a monthly topical all-in-one flea and heartworm medication that I use. I've heard it's fine for heartworms, but not so great if you live in a heavily flea-infested area. But I've experienced no issues with fleas even here in GA. I use that during flea months, and heartworm only (Heartguard) during winter months.
The cheapest place I could find it is online at drsfostersmith.com. Give yourself some time for shipping. Which reminds me...I need some!

I use Interceptor. I just saw the Costco.com sells Frontline? Has anyone bought it through Costco?

I haven't heard that. I'll have to let my Seniors know. I've been getting them to pool their orders for bulk discounts through my Vet. m aybe we could do better.

I saw Frontline in stock at Costco, too. BTW, they also have GREAT chicken jerky treats. A huge bag (3 lbs?) for around $17.

Louie's mom--so sorry to hear about the loss of hours at work.
Zorro's mom--watch out for the chicken jerky. It is made in china and they had a big recall awhile back. None of mine got sick, but three dogs died at my vet office from the infected chicken jerky made in china.
SquirrelDog6 is right. I called Nabisco when I was in college because my nutter butters were stuck together inside-out (I will admit that I was slightly intoxicated---I never would have done that sober!!) They sent me $50 in free coupons for Nabisco products!

I use Interceptor for my personal dogs because my cocker spaniel throws up the Heartgard.
For my fosters we use a brand called "Iverhart" which is basically off-brand Heartgard, because it is much cheaper.
You can also do like Cheryl and get plain Ivermectin from the vet. Ivermectin is not actually the brand, it's the active ingrediant in Heartgard.
Please be careful and talk to your vet before ordering from online. There has been a lot of problems recently with cheaper online pharmacies selling fake products that do not work.
If you have any non-whippets, please keep in mind- Ivermectin/Heartgard can NOT be used in Collies, Collie-mixes, or Collie-like breeds (shelties.)

Never knew that about the Collies. We usually order through my vet, but in bulk. He lets the seniors pool their resources to save cash. I heard that about online meds too.
