Since my 2 year old whippet had a seizure on July 7th, he still hasn't really come out of it. He has improved some, but he still doesn't know his name, and he still sometimes potties in the house. Thank you for all the incouragement, but if you know more about how much time it takes, or if my dog will ever get back to "normal" or "almost normal" I would sure appreciate it. I have had lots of animals, but none with seizures before.

what type of seizure did he have? is he on medication?

i haven't had a dog with seizures, but i have them. i was really sick a year ago with many seizures a day. now they are better under control but it takes a long time for the brain to heal.

one of the biggest triggers for me is food allergies. i've also had a head injury - but the allergies have been my worst contributor.

i don't take medications at all and treat with natural protocols. i'm starting to make some great progress.

good luck with your dog. i know a lot has been learned about people and dogs with seizures, and comparing the two. if i can help in any way, please email me.

What does your vet say? Have you called and asked them about it? If it's the medication they should be able to tell you how long it will take for your dog to adjust and hopefully do better. If not, what tests have they done or what do they thing the cause may be?

When my boxer had seizures, he was confused and had accidents in the house. But that was from the medication they gave her. It took about a month if I remember correctly before she started to do better and behave more normal. It seems she was in a daze when she was medicated, but that wore off in a few weeks.

I closed the earlier thread you started about the seizures so we don't get confused and answer two separate threads. Smiley-wink.gif

Our greyhound started having seizures back in November and we just started him on pheno 3 weeks ago, so I know how you're feeling. I'm at work right now, but at home, I've got some canine seizure websites I can pass along that you can check out. They have been VERY helpful to me.

From reading most of the sites and from what my vet has told me, it can take 1-2 weeks for the pheno to get into their system and become fully effective. If your dog is having balance/peeing issues after that time period, you need to talk to your vet about adjusting the dosage. That's what I've had to do with Phaelin. He's on pheno and sodium bromide and we've had to reduce the sodium bromide level he's taking because he acts drunk all the time. After just a couple of days, I'm already seeing a difference.

Good luck with your pup.

I have an 8 year old girl whippet who had 2 seizures within four months of each other. The vet wanted to try other things before just medicating her. We weren't exactly sure what caused the seizures to start with so we decided to try the process of elimination.
The seizures were not too severe so I was comfortable with this plan.
The first thing that we eliminated was preservatives in her food and treats.
Lucky us we apparently hit the nail on the head the first time. Darla has been over a year with no more seizures.
Does this mean that the problem was the preservatives? Maybe and Maybe not we may never know for sure but it seems to
be working. I know of other people who took their dogs off of preservatives and were able to either stop or reduce the amount of drugs they were giving their dogs.
Flea and tick preventatives can also cause seizures, one of my boys had a seizure due to this. Needless to say we don't put flea and tick preventatives on him anymore.
Hope this helps.
