Hello everyone,
Well my dilema is that i just rescued a whippet, she's 2 years old, i have a cat and also a yorkshire, when she arrived home, which was just now wheee.gif but my cat stats to run away from her and being in attack position, Mancha(whippet) doesn't do anything to her, she doesn't actually care:D and Zoe, my yorkie, is afraid of her youcrazy.gif and my whippet is always following me around and Zoe doesn't approach me because she's afraid of her.. I know i have a lot of work to do, but what do i do exactly?
Thank you

In my experience the stuff you're describing all works itself out. Give the cat an area where she can get away from the new pup by putting up a dog gate she can get through or blocking the area off in another way. It's good that she isn't chasing the cat, but keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't start chasing after she gets settled in.

Whippets are velcro dogs and she might follow you around like that forever! A lot of times they stop following so much after they get settled in though.

Zoe will calm down after she gets used to Mancha. I bet they'll be best buddies soon!

I agree you just got to let it work its self out.

Cupcake will forever chase our cats i think. but in the end I think my cat Edgar really likes getting slobbered on. but you should definitely keep an eye on her.

Congrats again!!

thank you!! i will definately let it work out...i think they are getting to it..Mancha is getting closer to my cat, but Zoe is afraid of her, today we went to the beach and she starts running after Zoe and running her over, so she gets really scared! I don't if she is chasing her or just playing with her..

It will workout. Lance is just now getting used to Cleo. and it is going on a year. Sometimes it seems to take forever, and other times it is love at first sight. lol.gif

Oh god!! I hope it doesn't take that long lol.gif she is such a sweetheart! The first time i went out she started crying, but the next time she didn't, she behave really well, my yorkie is the one who barks, it gets on my nerves, but Mancha is amazing! I was afraid she was going to bark also when i get out, but not really..Zoe is very attach to me, but i think Mancha will be also, she follows me around everywhere, lotsocoffee.gif

I second that it'll just take time for everyone to adjust -- but it is pretty important that you make sure that the little ones, especially the cat, have a safe getaway in case they need it- and I'd give her a stern "no" when she attempts to chase the cat so that doesn't become a great fun game.

Congrats on your new pup!! Whippets are amazing Smiley-wink.gif

Hello and welcomesign.gif . That is great that you were able to rescue a whippet. Whippets do sometimes like to chase small dogs, too, as well as cats, so I would be sure to keep an eye on your Yorkie until they both get used to each other. Hopefully, they will become best friends.

Thank you!!!
I think it's getting there, at least we all sleep in the same bed now lol.gif and my yorkie is getting closer to her..take a look

The only thing Mancha does is running after her, i didn't realize yet if she wants to play or chase her, but she scares Zoe away..how do i teach her that she can hurt my yorkie? I think she doesn't know she can hurt her..

We have a whippet and a smaller dog, too, a smooth fox terrier. Alf used to like to run with Gracie when we took them to the school yard, but lately, he doesn't run with her like he used to. I think he has learned that Gracie will out run him and grab him by the neck as if he were the prey. He doesn't like that, so he just doesn't run any more, even though Gracie tries to get him to run. I think your Yorshire will learn the same lesson, too. She will stop running away from your whippet. Our cat does the same thing, too. She just stands there and waits until the whippet loses interest, and then she walks away.

Thank you..i hope so, because today Mancha hurted my yorkie while we were at the park, she starts running and then stopps on top of my yorkie and starts to bit her like she is playing, but she hurts her.. cry1.gif

Be very careful with your blended family. Whippets see cats and smaller dogs as prey.

In Feb I adopted a 5 yr old whippet, in April my dog was introduced to an IG. Within a few minutes he snatched up the IG and took off with him. I was terrified, screaming, running and throwing things to get him to stop. We finally got the dogs apart, my whippet he had a couple puncture wounds around his mouth, but the poor IG was badly shaken and in shock with several puncture wounds to his body. It was horrifiying. I did not sleep for two nights. I was never able to find out what happened to the IG.

I take full responsibility for my actions that day, I made a few mistakes and learned a great lesson. I will never let my whippet off leash with a small dog or cat.

Reading through the posts I see that there are many successful blended animal families. Know that it takes time and a lot of effort on your part Until you get to know your new whippet, excersize caution around smaller animals.

I still crate Nass at night and let my cat sleep with me as he's always done. This works well for all of us.

Good luck with your new addition, he is a beauty!

I, too, suggest keeping a close eye on the whippet and small animals. Behavior with your animals will be OK if you set clear boundaries at home, but outside the house or with other small animals you will never know. My 11 year old took my sister's cat down by the throat during out last visit. It seems a little hard to know when and what is going to trigger that prey drive.

THank you so much for all the help you've been giving me:) i will sure keep an eye on them
