The time went by so fast when we were chatting. I had wanted to read something that I typically post for someone dealing with an SA dog:
There are several things you can try and sometimes finding just the right combination of changes, and keeping a routine is the key.
First of all, make sure that he has a walk and or play time before you leave. That will alleviate some of his anxiety - the more tired the hound, the less trouble he causes most of the time. If there is no time for a long walk, at least chase him around the yard or something like that.
Before you leave (and not right when you are leaving because they know the signs), turn on the TV or radio for him, make sure he has his toys and maybe a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter. You can try purchasing a DAP diffuser or spray - many dog owners find it to be helpful You can read about DAP's here:
http://www.healthypets.com/dapdogappher.htmlI would really try your best to limit his view of the driveway and road. For example, put your babygate across the liviing room entrance if that is how he can see those areas. My guys get very nervous if they can watch me come and go. Remember, when they were at the kennel, they had a limited living space, and they were with many other dogs and people 24/7 - its a HUGE change to be all alone in a big "scarey" house.
When you do leave, make it very calm and unexciting - same thing for your return. Just like "bye sweetie" and hand him his Kong toy - and off you go.
You should dog-proof the areas he can get into until this is under control. Pull your shades up, make sure there are no CD's or books in his reach - stuff like that.
Finally, they do make extra tall baby gates of all shapes and sizes. Here are some good examples:
