Start with a grade of 100:

meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract
5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first
five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice
flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2
meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic
to beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit:

add 5 points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

helpful information, and I almost bought some of that Dick Van Patten stuff last time and I've heard before that its good stuff. I'm still thinking of getting some this go around because I have enough of their current meal to do a careful switching of food. I buy dog food for two weeks at a time.

Out of curiosity I figured out what grade our food gets since it wasn't on the list. I hope I did this right...

IAMS Proactive Health Chunks 1+ years 88 B (new food we are going to try)
-10 Chicken By-Product Meal
-3 protein source not meat meal and less than 2 meats in top 3 ingred.
-2 contains chicken fat
+3 beet pulp

Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition small crunchy bites. 41 F (food I bought as a new/naive dog owner who jumped at a discount bag, now embarrassed of cource)
-10 ch by-prod meal
-20 meat and bone meal, animal fat
-10 BHA/BHT
-10 wheat mill run
-3 not meat meal
-3 art colors
-2 animal fat
-1 salt

Looks like I need to get a Costco card again...

Any suggestions of what Whippet owners use/like? for dog food?

I feed raw but if you are looking for a good kibble I highly recommend Orijen, Innova Evo, or Natures Variety to name a few. smile.gif

Zorro loves Innova (I think it's the large breed one). He's extremely regular at 2-3 times/day, and he has a lot of energy and very soft hair. He does have bad breath sometimes, though...

I have found this chart to be helpful also. It rates the food, lists ingredients, mentions good and bad qualities, and compares quality and price.

Merrick's changed their formula so we have switched to Taste of the Wild Wetlands formula with wild duck for Lance and Cleo and Taste of the Wild Fish for the iggies.
And it costs less than Merrick's.

I feed CS to all my foster dogs and I am very happy with it. It's a very good quality food at a fraction of the price of some of the other high end foods. Heck, it's less expensive than many of the crappy foods out there.
